During my orientation to teach inside Rhode Island’s prison system, a correctional officer said something that still sits with me: “We have all done something that could land us in prison. We just weren’t caught.”
The statement was not meant to suggest that every mistake causes the same harm or deserves the same consequence. It challenged the comfortable line we draw between “good people” and “bad people,” and between those we believe deserve another opportunity and those we permanently define by their worst decision.
